Personal Adornment

My customary manner of dress is long skirts and Mary Jane type of shoes. I always wear earrings that match my outfit, usually dangling earrings, and maybe a matching bracelet. I see myself as a bit of a hippie from the 60s. I am a hippie from the 60s. I wear very little makeup, and my glasses are black plastic square frames a la Buddy Holly only slightly smaller in size. I have long red hair. I do not have any tattoos or piercings (other than ear lobes).

The main feature of my manner of dress is that I always wear something black. Always. I started wearing black on December 8, 1980 – the day John Lennon was murdered. For years and years I wore all black a great deal of the time. My kids called me an aged death walker. Here is a photo of me in 1999 wearing all black and taken by the entrance to Strawberry Fields, the portion of Central Park in New York City dedicated to the memory of John Lennon.

Seven or so years ago my wearing black as a sign of mourning over John’s murder evolved into a sort of personal tribute to him instead. Wearing black is a natural part of my being, and in my thoughts wearing black is still a connection to John. I do mix in some color now – usually reds or turquoise. Since changing my hair color to red three or four years ago, I have been adding colors I’ve never worn before such as yellows, greens and oranges.

Some comments on my dress aside from the color issue: I probably dress more conservative than not. I try not to go to the store in sweats or a t-shirt. I don’t dress up or anything, but I try not to look sloppy. My dress at both my jobs is business casual which suits my style.

When I was a teenager the beliefs and values of my family conflicted greatly with my style of dress. There were a lot of threats to lower my hems to make my skirts longer, and I had to avoid certain members of my family entirely. Being Southern Calvary Baptists in Texas I can understand why they had a problem with my hippie manner of dress. Here is a photo of me as a teenager in one of my “outrageous” outfits that caused so much fuss. I wish I still had those shoes.

My closest friend in Eugene dresses conservatively for a professional job during the week, and she and her husband wear a lot of Duck gear on weekends. My far-flung friends dress in every style from tie-dyed t-shirts to business suits. No one core belief defines my peers – thank goodness.

I think that it is awesome that you have made such a dedication to John Lennon. I have an aunt who wears this necklace that is in honor of a friend who was in a punk rock band that has passed away just recently. I hope that one day I will be have someone who has touched me and influenced me in away that I would want to make some sort of dedication to them.

You sound like an incredibly unique and fascinating individual. I am beyond addicted to music of all sorts, my favorite, too, being that of the Beatles, as my dad was an avid listener and follower of anything and everything they would do. I find it fascinating that you wear an article of some sort in 'black' for a John Lennon tribute, as he was very influential in music as a whole. Why is it, do you think, that color is slowly being incorporated into your wardrobe? Could it have to do with this change in hair color and, potentially, confidence as well? Also, I like that you have continued wearing black, this many years later and into the present as a dedication. I have my 'things' and 'flings' with fashion but nothing that has stuck for so long and with so much meaning. Is there any chance also that you do so now by habit or does he and 'black' still hold the same significance to you? Your children are lucky to have you, you sound fun! :)

I think that is really cool that you have made a point to take a part of your fashion from a significant moment in your life. To take something like that and make it a part of you is great and just goes to show how personal adornment can be influenced by our values and the impact of others. I think you are an excellent example of the whole objective of this assignment. You have taken something that could have been a phase and made it so much more than that by incorporating it into your identity.
